The practice has operated from the current site since 1987 when the then partnership led by Dr George Adan purchased the land and built a bungalow style purpose-built surgery with a central courtyard, six consulting rooms and a shared nurse treatment room.
Prior to this the practice had shared premises at the Health Centre on Cheapside with Bishop's Close Surgery and Dr Adam (who was later replaced by Dr Roy). Before the health centre opened in 1973, the GPs provided services from a house in King Street.
On 6 March 2010 Adan House was burned to the ground (two young children playing with matches). This was a Saturday evening and we lost everything. The practice, however, was up and working on Monday morning albeit from temporary premises. In June that year the practice moved into a series of joined together portable offices on the car park of the health centre where we stayed until the new building was in place.
On 17 October 2011 we moved into the new (current) building and, very sadly, Dr Sensier, our senior partner who had been instrumental in the rebuilding, collapsed, and died a few days later. This was a huge blow to us all and it was with great difficulty that we continued to provide a service to our patients. After a year we dedicated the building to Dr Sensier's name and it became Sensier House.
The new two storey building has 16 consulting rooms, a dispensary, and a large administration suite. However, the ongoing development within the town meant that very soon even such a large building was not enough for our practice population and large multi-disciplinary clinical team so, on the retirement of Dr Roy from the single-handed practice at Oxford Road, the partners purchased the building and took on the patients registered there. This provided a further eight clinical rooms (and two more after renovation).
In August 2015 Dr Anthony Long retired and Dr Neil Middleton joined the practice. Over the next three years or so, with the retirements of Dr Hopper and Patel and with Dr Waller and Dr Walker leaving the practice, Dr Middleton brought in his friends from medical school, Dr Victoria Oliphant, Dr Matthew Shield and Dr Victoria Middleton. With such a young partnership it is hoped that it will continue to serve the people of Spennymoor and the surrounding villages for many years to come.
