Emergency support for unpaid carers

All unpaid carers who care for adults are entitled to support in an emergency to help make sure the person they care for is safe and their needs are met. To access emergency support the carer (or someone else on their behalf) should call Social Care Direct on 03000 267979. A duty officer will ask for details such as name, address and information about the person who is cared for. If no friends or family can assist in the emergency, they will send a care assistant to provide care/support.

This emergency support is provided by Supportive through the Short Term Assistance Service.

Young Carers Neighbourhood Charter

Every day children in the UK face the struggle of providing care and support to family members affected by physical or mental ill health; often with little or no support.

Our Young Carers Neighbourhood Charter aims to ensure that young carers are identified and supported at the earliest opportunity. The Charter engages the local community to expand support and services for young carers across County Durham.

What is a Young Carer?

  • Young carers are children and young people who help care in families where someone has an illness, a disability, a mental health issue or for someone who has an alcohol or drug problem.
  • The person they help care for might be a parent, a sibling, a grandparent or other relative, or maybe a friend.

In County Durham, Family Action’s Young Carers service - known locally as “The Bridge” is taking the next step and reaching out to schools, organisations and communities through a “Young Carers Neighbourhood Charter” to increase their awareness and ability to support young carers.

Click here to download a pdf file entitled "Making a Difference for Young Carers".

Support was received through NHS England Community grant funding to develop a short film about work undertaken with healthcare services, and the impact this has had on young carers in the area.
